Lighthouse to Lighthouse Tour

This package takes you from Penmon Lighthouse on the South East Coast to South Stack lighthouse on Holy Island (North West Anglesey).  The tour follows the official Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path along the East & North Coast for a total of 70 miles. 7 nights bed and breakfast, 6 days walking.

DAY 1

Pick up from Bangor station on the mainland or Llanfairpwllgwyngyll (the village with the longest name) station on Anglesey. Pick up is possible from Anglesey Airport.

Taken to accommodation in Beaumaris area. (Beaumaris Castle - World Heritage Site )

DAY 2

Transport from accommodation to Penmon Priory and nearby Lighthouse. Cross Red Wharf Bay and Benllech's blue flag beach before arriving at the fishing village of Moelfre where you will stay the night.

DAY 3

Explore the village of Moelfre, with it's famous Lifeboat Museum and Seawatch Centre. Pass the memorial to the Royal Charter, a gold-laden clipper which sank on nearby cliffs whilst sailing from Australia to Liverpool in 1859. Charles Dickens was sent here from London to report on the tragedy and even wrote a book about it.

Cross unspoilt sandy beaches and the Dulas estuary to reach Point Lynas lighthouse near Llaneilian .

DAY 4

Visit the Heritage Centre at Amlwch Port to learn about the history of the Parys Copper mine - the biggest copper mine in the world in eighteenth century.

Pass the dramatic ruins of Borthwen Brickworks, which can only be accessed on foot or by boat. Reach Wales' northen-most point, before visiting Llanbadrig church, dedicated to Patrick , the patron saint of Ireland.

You could opt for some wine-tasting at one of Anglesey's vineyards near Llanbadrig, before continuing to the thriving fishing village of Cemaes Bay.

DAY 5

Today you will traverse the remotest part of the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path.

Cross the Cemlyn lagoon Nature Reserve - stopping to see if you can spot the various birds that visit here.

Continue along the path towards the Skerries lighthouse at Carmel Head before encountering the spectacular rock formation at Ynys Fydlyn.

Continue down to Church Bay and visit Swtan Cottage - the last thatched cottage on the island, before crossing sandy beaches to finish at Porth Trefadog with views towards the busy port of Holyhead.

DAY 6

Walk the Alaw Estuary with it's connections to the tragic heroine Branwen, the subject of the second medieval tale of the Mabinogi. Cross the Stanley Embankment which connects Holy Island to the rest of Anglesey, making it an island within an island!

Call for refreshments at the renovated tollhouse at the Penrhos Nature Reserve.

12 miles

DAY 7

Climb Holyhead mountain passing the remains of the Roman hillfort before descending to the spectacular South Stack lighthouse.

Walk the 400 steps down to the lighthouse, crossing the rope bridge, before climbing to the chamber that houses the main light.

Visit Elin's Tower (now owned by the RSPB), where you can observe and learn about the the various birds that reside on the nearby cliffs .

Depart from Holyhead / Bangor station or Anglesey Airport.
